I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a look at THE DRAMA, directed by Kristoffer Borgli, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. A happy, soon-to-be-married couple experience an unexpected turn in their relationship that throws their wedding week into turmoil.

This was a fascinating film, sure to be controversial. There isn’t so much a plot twist as a revelation that turns everything upside down. The film starts out as a bubbly energetic rom-com. Then something happens that turns the tone into a serious drama, BUT the plot still hits all the rom-com cliches. So having this dangerous darkness happening during wedding dances and silly DJ mixups feels weird and new. The second act gets very slow and is too long, but things zip into high-energy for a jaw-dropping finale. There is so much to dig into thematically here; about forgiveness or how much people can change. The fluid editing; seamlessly moving between scenes, flashbacks, and hallucinations deserves an award.

Best Scene. The titular revelation scene. Just 4 actors going to town with meaty dialogue and whiplashing emotions. There is so much communicated with eye glances and micro-expressions, subtextual intrigue with wine. this scene is exquisite.

Best Performance. Robert Pattinson has this nervy Hugh Grant-like energy that is really fun. One cool thing to keep an eye on is that is British in the film, which brings a unique viewpoint on the revelation. Alana Haim really pissed me off, and I THINK her character is supposed to, but I still didn’t appreciate that in a film of complexity, she is not.

A brash, darkly hilarious film that teaches the most important lesson of all: Be careful the games you play while drunk with friends!
