I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a 2025er review, looking at THE LIFE OF CHUCK, directed by Mike Flanagan, starring Tom Hiddleston. A story about three chapters in the life of accountant Charles Krantz.

This is a gentle, lovely story, an adaptation of a Stephen King short story, that has so much power in its scenes; but is completely ruined by its plot structure. The 3-act structure mixes genres, from creepy thriller to depression to supernatural to family drama to teen movie, which sounds fun, but when we don’t know what kind of film we are watching, it is hard to know how we should respond. The movie puts so much importance on the needlessly complicated mysteries, that is undercuts the emotion. the beginning third feels like a waste of our time. that is frustrating!

Best Scene. The dancing scenes, both of them. They are so exuberant and filled with the all the flavors of happiness and exultation. All the hope of who we can be and the multitudes we contain. The finale is disappointing, but the last three edits, set to the beat of the score, across decades of time, just rocked me. One of the rare films where I sat through all the credits, just to elongate that last experience.

Best Performance. It took me awhile to recognize Mia Sara, and actor who has been long retired but came back for this film. Most will recognize her as Sloane from FERRIS BULLER’S DAY OFF. She is alive and beautiful a fleeting thing of grace. Kate Siegel has one tender scene that is the keystone to the whole film and she nails it.

For those who seek this film out, I recommend not trying too hard to figure it out. Let it flow over you, and enjoy the emotions it calls up.
