I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a look at STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU, directed by Jon Favreau, starring Pedro Pascal. A follow-up to the eponymous TV show, a bounty hunter and his baby Yoda charge go on exciting CGI adventures.

Perfectly fine and fun, but this movie has no sense of the Star Wars magic. Look, I love the Mandalorian TV show, especially the first 2 seasons. This movie is just two TV show episodes glued together. The first part is very bad, with bland CGI, atrocious dialogue, and a basic quest plot. The second part is more fun; a puppet show that dares to get a little bit weird. But the thrill, the 2-suns awe of Star Wars is nowhere to be found here. I don’t need Skywalker and lightsabers, and I know this is a minor key Star Wars entry, but wonder doesn’t cost millions. And while it works in the weekly TV show for the hero to be a featureless mask, it does NOT work in a movie. There is no face to communicate emotion or texture or subtlety, and it feels depressing that in that gap of empathy, we need to latch onto either a puppet or a CGI alien face.

Best Scene. The first fight scene in the snow is really fun; the atmosphere is moody and Mando moves like an assassin. I’m not sure what the hell AT-ATs are doing on a mountain pass, but everything is fast-moving. I also really love a big creature reveal in the second half in a pool. Some of the frames in that sequence look like paintings.

Best Performance. Sigourney was just a low-energy exposition dump and there really are no other performances here. Nope. No award.

Watch the pretty lights and have fun. But for those of us at a certain age, who remember glory Star Wars days, the awe and adventure and newness, this just feels sad.
