I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a look at SUPERGIRL, directed by Craig Gillespie, starring Milly Alcock. A disillusioned Supergirl must hunt down an evil mercenary when he hurts someone close to her.

This film is aggressively mediocre, with murky visuals, cluttered action, and a pedestrian screenplay. After last summer’s quirky and shaggy SUPERMAN, this felt like a step backwards, into more of a traditional studio sci-fi mold. There was a lot of forced humor and over-emphasis on the sarcastic ‘bad-girl’ parts. I ate up any moment that actually went for a little bit of awe or stakes for Supergirl, like anytime she basked in the yellow sunlight. Lobo’s inclusion was extremely forced, it felt a little icky, like the suits got uncomfortable that 2 women were leading a major summer picture alone for a few minutes. Why did it feel like we spent a whole movie with the Ravagers from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? I did love a late choice that Supergirl made that is something Superman never would have done. But there was no follow-up on that choice, come on!

Best Scene. A nice cover song set to a slow-mo one-shot of Supergirl causing carnage was excellent. It brought some awe at her powers and a little bit of sadness that so much destruction was needed. This was the only scene actually trying to be about something.

Bert Performance. I have problems with the movie, but not with Milly Alcock, she was excellent at playing all sides of Supergirl. Though I would love to see more of her serious side and her spicy bickering with Superman.

Sorry, Supergirl deserves a lot better than this stale formula, don’t expect much!
