I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute and we are running down my ranking of the 10 nominees for Oscars BEST PICTURE 2025.

#9 is FRANKENSTEIN, directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Oscar Isaacs and Jacob Elordi

I wanted to like this film so much more than I did. It is a classic story that del Toro has obviously been itching to make for decades, but he has already told similar tale so much better in his other films like SHAPE OF WATER or the HELLBOYS. There is no new ground tread here. The production design is expectedly sumptuous next-level work. There was a lot more CGI than I expected, it did not look good.

Best scene. The ending attempts to pull the threads of the film together, and it doesn’t quite get there. The emotion isn’t really built up to in the film. But I do love the framing of the ending as a father and son dynamic, the trauma heaped on each other, and how, at the end, forgiveness can be the most important and easy gift to give. That feels new to the Frankenstein myth.

Best performance. Jacob Elordi does some lovely delicate work as the Creature. His scenes of tenderness and hurt and wonder begin to bring the film to life, but his story happens far too late in the narrative. Instead of all the shouty focus on Dr. Frankenstein, I would have preferred we start with this tender and terrifying creation.
