Scream 7

I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a look at SCREAM 7, directed by Kevin Williamson, starring Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox.
1 out of 5
What the hell happened?! I really enjoy the SCREAM movies. 1 & 2 are classics. 3 is usually thought of as the worst but has the best ending of the whole series. 4 brings on the nerdy and introduces a fan fave character. 5; exciting new cast and a really shocking twist. 6; Ghostface in NY! Now I know there was a LOT of backstage drama for 7, that will happen when you fire half your team for a social media post mildly criticizing another country. Kevin Williamson, the famous writer of #1 is back, but did he really write this?? Where is the snap to the dialogue, the outrageous twists, the convoluted killers backstory?? The characters make really dumb choices in 7; but Scream is supposed to be smarter than that. Scream is the movie that mocks its own characters for their stupid choices! The twists are random and meh, the kills are reasonably creative but they vary wildly in tone from mean to silly. Pick a lane! The AI-angle was potentially exciting but really a letdown, And for those expecting more Courtney Cox after her increased role in NY, forget about it, she randomly disappears for half this film.
Best Scene. I guess the opening scene set at an AirBnb recreation of the Scream 1 murder house. Its self-referential and fun, with a couple cool images and a really mean streak that feels new.
Performance. I mean, its nice to have Neve Campbell back, but I am not sure she is adding anything new to the character. I was frustrated with most of her character’s choices. She does have a nice moment later in an interview where her voice gets husky when talking about her family and old friends.
A real disappointment, I’m hoping this is just a one-off misfire in the series.
