I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a look at CRIME 101, directed by Bart Layton, starring Chris Hemsworth and a million other people.

3 out of 5

Thieves and heists in hard-boiled LA. I enjoyed what this film was trying to be, but it is 45min too long and it really suffered by constantly comparing itself to HEAT. I mean there are direct 1to1 character matches to HEAT with Hemsworth mapping to DeNiro, Ruffalo to pacino, monica barbaro to edie, and Keoghan to waynegro. And this film just can’t match up to that classic. I would have liked to see it be a little crazier instead of so straight and stolid, but there is a thrill to seeing well-staged cops-and-robbers staging heist sequences around LA. Everything is done well and the actors get chances to chew.

Best Scene. There was a fun motorcycle-car chase that ends in a convenience store. Barry Keoghan is an absolute chaos agent in this film and you have no clue what he is going to do at any moment in that store. It jolted the film for a moment into a new jagged crazy feel that I loved. Your mileage may vary on if you like Keoghan or find him annoying, but I’ll always show up for bonkers Keoghan.

Best Performance. Hemsworth is unfortunately miscast here; burying all his charm under a slab of non-expression. And I love Ruffalo, but this is the SAME character he has played a million times, confusingly identical to his FBI agent in TASK. Other than Keoghan, I was really impressed with Halle Berry, making a full meal with a conflicted and fiery insurance agent. And Monica Barbaro crafts a compelling character we are rooting for, with only a few scenes.

Watch this over a couple of nights at home and sink into the LA vibe, this is fun!
