Oscars 2026 Ceremony: Thoughts

I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute with a quick debrief after the Oscars 2026.

Quick review: I loved it, best overall ceremony that I can remember in a long time. No huge surprises in the wins, though it was truly wonderful to see the first woman cinematographer win. Her speech was exactly what was needed, correcting a gargantuan historical oversight. There were lovely speeches, decent humor (though not quite as funny as it has been in the past), the awards presentation banter was expectedly horrid, but the biggest improvement was in the non-awards segments. They finally nailed an memorial section and gave it heft and emotion. Billy Crystal’s speech for Carl Reiner was wonderful and Barbara Streisand was glorious in her talking/singing tribute to Robert Redford. The Demon Hunter ‘Golden’ performance was awesome, the lights were a funny add.

But the crowning achievement onf the night was that performance of the infamous Sinners song sequence; the camera ducking and weaving through performances and time periods. The hairs on my neck were standing up and I was grinning as each cameo came in, with the crowning moment of Misty Copeland spinning her way across the stage. Wow. Electrifying moment, one that will stand as the best of Oscars for a long time.

I loved Conan’s kickoff with the Weapons-parody paired very well with the always welcome Beastie Boys needle drop, this felt like classic Crystal goofiness. Avengers reunion bombed, that was ludicrous that you Skype in Matt freakin’ Berry instead of having him in-person. It was nice to see the Bridesmaids cast together, though it went on a bit long. And a game Mustachioed DiCaprio is always welcome.

I loved the line from Jessi Buckley, dedicating her award to ‘the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.” Wonderful. Michael b Jordan gave a fantastic speech, honoring the past titans who paved the way for his win. Amy Madigan winning was delightful. Sean Penn was a no-show for his win, booooo. And PTA finally got a ridiculously-delayed Oscar for his staggering body of work. OBAA may not have been my favorite of the year, but a timely and absolutely deriving Best Picture winner that will stand the test of time.

2025 was a banger year for film, I’m excited to see what 2026 can bring. And one little mention of my favorite moment from last night. After his win, Jordan walking off, giving a little fist raise to Jesse Plemons, his co-star ‘Lance’ from Friday Night Lights all those years ago. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
