Sasquatch Movie Minute - TRANSCRIPTS of video reviews

The Rip

I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute and I’m here with a review of THE RIP, the Netflix thriller directed by Joe Carnahan.

I’m giving it a 3/5

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon lead a crew of hard cussin’, chain smoking, testosteroney Miami cops that also include Steven Yeun and recent Oscar nominee Teyana Taylor.

This is a Carnahan flick. Gritty, manly, the shadow of TRAINING DAY looms large over this one. There were too many scenes that were setup just so they could feed a later twist or fake twist. And the fact that these bomb-hard women get dropped from half the narrative is a crime in of itself.

BEST SCENE. A quiet tense confrontation between Yeun and Damon; both testing each other, teasing out alliances and loyalty with dialogue. The movie finally takes a breath here and is the better for it.

BEST PERFORMANCE. Steven Yeun. Damon and Affleck are doing their straight-faced yelly-Boston thing, but Yeun gets to explore facets of fear, exasperation, and kindness.

ENDING. Carnahan goes for his usual emotional finish, but I thought this one fell short. But I’ll always have this guy’s back, he made THE freakin’ GREY!

Skip this one, or throw on while folding laundry.
