I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute and we are running down my ranking of the 10 nominees for Oscars BEST PICTURE 2025.

#10 is F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski, starring Brad Pitt

Look, this is an enormous cheesy-as-hell blockbuster that was fun to watch, but completely vapid in any type of meaning or subtext, so just does NOT belong on the list of 10 Best films. Kosinski’s last film, TOP GUN MAVERICK, was actually a good film and F1 even copies a lot of the MAVERICK narrative (over-the-hill pro teaches the next generation new tricks). Brad Pitt looks great, but he his performance is disinterested. I had no idea what to make of his story arc, he just wants to be a bum, with no human connections, searching for that next racing high? Is that an admirable thing?

Best scene. The crash scene halfway through in the rain is excellent tension momentum filmmaking. When the sound cuts out and you just see this metal death beast flying through the air at ungodly speeds, I gasped out loud. Even though this led to one of my least favorite narrative shortcuts (create drama by blaming the lead for something that isn’t his fault, but the lead is too noble to correct anyone)

Performance. Without a doubt, my favorite sidekick actor of last year was Javier Bardem. He takes the you-old-son-of-a-bitch cliché and dives in hard, resulting in a cheesy-fun performance that is massively entertaining. He knows what kind of movie this is.

A great time in IMAX, a technical miracle, but no substance. For deeper racing movies see FORD VS FERRARI or RUSH.
