CANNES 2026 - T's Top 3!

I’m Trevor with the Sasquatch Movie Minute and its Wonky Wednesday so am going to chat a bit about the biggest Film Festival in the world that just wrapped up: The Cannes Film Festival. Which I did NOT attend. Cannes is loud and glitzy and French; home to the pretentious 10-minute standing ovations, often for crappy movies (I see you BEAVER and PAPERBOY!). But it still is the bellweather for movie awards season with its prestigious Palme d’Or award. Here are 5 films screaming out of Cannes that I am excited for!

#6 JOHN LENNON: THE LAST INTERVIEW. In order to bring visuals to Lennon’s last radio interview, Steven Soderbergh uses generative AI to add video to the audio interview. This sounds like a scandal, a spectacular failure, and I just want to watch the car crash!

#5 THE MAN I LOVE. A tearjerker drama about an artist dying of AIDS starring Rami Malek. A very light topic, but I am always in for Malek’s unique acting style, and word is that his performance is exquisite.

#4 FJORD. The Palm d’Or WINNER! A Romanian/Norweigan immigrant drama starring chameleon Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. This looks very dark and serious, with controversial subject matter. Might be a slog, but rumors are that it could be great. Fingers crossed!

#3 HER PRIVATE HELL. Nicolas Winding Refn movies are either astounding, like DRIVE, or abysmal, like ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Early reviews have this more on the crappy side. I don’t care, I’m in, his movies are never boring!

#2 PAPER TIGER from James Gray who did one of my favorite movies, AD ASTRA. This is a star-studded crime drama with Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller. Will this be another middling recent crime dramas like RIP or CRIME 101? Or could this be the next HEAT?

#1 CLUB KID. This is a film by Jordan Firstman, who created the hilarious Gen Z TV show, I LOVE LA. From all accounts, this film about NY queer club life doesn’t lose any of the comedy of Firstman’s TV work, but adds a genuine heartwarming sense of drama. Picked up by A24.
